Little brothers can get the best of you.
Growing up, my dad and I would have our Sunday night tradition- watching Alfred Hitchcock movies on the classic movie channel on Sunday nights. There was nothing like a big bowl of popcorn, ginger ale, and a good thriller (especially knowing that Dad was there to protect me in case I got too scared!).
I should probably take a quick moment to state that I get *way* to into movies/books/tv shows…to the point where I will cry during sad or emotional scenes (let’s not talk about that google chrome commercial from a few years back), yell out encouragement to movie characters (yes, in the theater), or practically look like I’m having a seizure from wringing my hands during stressful moments. And yes, this is quite enjoyable for other people to witness.
On this particular Sunday night, my dad and I had watched Psycho. As always, I had gotten a bit scared, but with Dad there I was able to tough it out. Afterwards, I hopped into the shower to start getting ready for school on Monday.
Now, for those of you that haven’t seen the movie, there is a memorable scene where a woman is stabbed through a shower curtain.
You can probably already see where this story is going.
My mother, bless her heart, told my middle brother of a wonderful trick he could do…all he had to do was grab his huge plastic pirate sword.
So, here I was, showering, thinking about going back to school the next day, still a bit on edge from the movie, when the next thing you know I felt myself being jabbed through the shower curtain with a knife-like object.
Let’s just say that my vocal cords gave a performance worthy of Psycho itself. It’s a wonder my brother still has his hearing.
P.S. Years later in medical school, the cat I had hit me with her paw through the shower curtain when I wasn’t suspecting it while getting ready in the morning. It’s amazing the cat isn’t deaf, either.
Scarily Easy Pumpkin Pasta
maybe the carbs will help lull me to sleep
Ingredients
- 1 lb dried pasta (I prefer cavatappi)
- 1 c fat free half and half
- 1 c canned pumpkin
- 1 tbsp fresh sage, finely minced
- 1/4 c grated parmesan cheese
- Salt
- Pepper
How-to
- In a large pot, bring to a boil water. Salt generously.
- Cook pasta according to package directions and drain, reserving some of the pasta water if needed to thin out sauce.
- Return pasta to hot pot. Stir in parmesan cheese, then half and half, then canned pumpkin. Add in sage. If needed, thin out sauce with additional pasta water (this sauce will really thicken up as it cools).
- Salt and pepper to taste and serve!
Don’t even get me started on that Google Chrome commercial!! I’ve been so obsessed with it that I actually started a secret email address for my daughter a few months ago. She’s already 7, and I’m bummed I didn’t think about this earlier. Alas, she will still have lots of emails and pictures from me to enjoy someday down the road…
Hahahaha yeah I’m totally tempted to do that too if I ever had a kid.
Sounds perfect! The pasta, not the shower thing… For that I would have exacted a terrible revenge. Once I’d recovered.
Hahahahahaha the problem was is that I always scared easier than him, so anything I tried just wasn’t as terrifying!
I love Hitchcock 🙂 That shower scene was one of the scariest I ever saw as a child – actually, it is still terrifying! Also, that pasta looks amazing! Quite simple too!
Thanks for the laugh and the great recipe.
Love Hitchcock and that was pretty funny. I laughed out loud. 🙂
I’m always tempted to watch Hitchcock again, but it’s just not the same unless I’m at my parents’ house with my dad.
Oh my gosh that pasta sounds so good and so easy!
It is!
I too get overly emotionally involved in movies and books. It is indeed hilarious to all the people who know me best.
Pumpkin and pasta is the best combo ever. My mother sent me a recipe for pumpkin pasta bake a few years ago, and I was like, “Really? You put the pumpkin in the pasta?” But once I tasted it, I was a total convert.
Yeah I had pumpkin-filled ravioli before so I figured this would be a nice recipe…I saw something similar on tv and wanted to make it healthier!
Glad to know I’m not the only person that gets a bit too involved…
gotta try that recipe. so into pumpkin.
The only Hitchcock movie I ever saw was The Birds – totally flipped out on those birds attacking people.
So seeing a mass of birds on a power line is still terrifying? 😉
Great story!!
I still think that Psycho is the most frightening film that I have ever seen. As I never watched a frightening film after my first viewing of Psycho, I know this to be true.
Yeah I’ve pretty much vowed never to watch it again…
Great story, very funny!
Thanks for reposting! 🙂
Pumpkin pasta looks delicious and really easy to make! Thanks again for the follow on #atenewyork!
You’re welcome! 🙂
This design is spectacular! You definitely know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Great job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
Oh that was a funny story, you made me chuckle. See the new HBO movie called “The Girl.”
The wife made this yesterday along with some salmon cakes (that we ate like burgers). Good stuff 🙂
Oh glad you liked it! It’s always great to hear that my recipes turn out well for other people, too! 🙂
I have been reading this blog for a very good although. Keep up the wonderful job you are doing here.
Great write-up, I am regular visitor of one’s site, maintain up the excellent operate, and It’s going to be a regular visitor for a long time.
I love it : ) I used to get my grandmother to sit up and watch scary stuff with me. My daughter, who is 15, now does the same thing with me. Her dad loves to scare her. She usually will watch something funny after watching a scary movie. I did the same thing when I was her age. Great post. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog. Will definitely continue to read. Congrats on the Freshly Pressed too : )
See I should watch something funny afterwards- normally I just try to go to bed and then I have nightmares!
And thanks! I was pretty excited about it. 🙂
I love savory pumpkin meals. I can’t wait to try this pumpkin pasta! & your stories are too funny! Always amused!
sounds yummy but can you enlighten a not-living-in-America reader if there is a substitute for half and half [ cos we don’t have that in Aus]
Half and half is half cream, half milk. You could always try using cream if you want a thicker sauce, or milk if you want something thinner.
That google chrome commercial just made me cry & then I repeated it & cried again. The pumpkin as a sauce is such a great idea – I had something similar on a risotto once, and never did figure out how to make it so I’m looking forward to trying this!
Glad it worked out for you!
This looks so good. I love anything with pumpkin…I will have to try to make a gluten-free, vegan version!
Shouldn’t be that hard to change it up 🙂
